Rohini nakshatra lies entirely within Taurus. To be specific 10°40’ — 23°20’ Taurus (sidereal).

The Myth

The myth associated with Rohini tells the story of the creation of the 27 nakshatras and their shadow side. The story goes like this:

Brahma the creator produced ten divine beings to assist him in the creation of the universe. One of these divine beings, Daksha, fathered 60 daughters. Out of them, 27 of them were the Nakshatras. These 27 nakshatras were then given as a gift to the Moon-god.

Now, the moon would spend one day with each of his wives — the nakshatras. However, out of them all, Rohini was his favorite, because of her beauty and charm. This led to the Moon spending more time with Rohini whenever he visited her. Whereas he was used to spend about a day with each of his 27 nakshatra wives, the moon would spend more than a day with Rohini.

The other 26 wives of the moon started to get jealous of Rohini because of the extra attention she received from the moon. They complained to Brahma and Daksha about the favoritism the moon has been showing towards Rohini. This ended up in the moon being cursed — so that he waxes and wanes for the rest of his existence, as he visits each of his wives — the nakshatras.

If you haven’t guessed already, this myth represents the moon cycle over a month.

Symbolism

Rohini can be translated to mean the ‘red one’, ‘blushing bride’, or ‘the arouser’. Regardless of how exactly it is translated, it has a very strong theme of procreation, fertility, sensuality, and passion.

The deity assigned to Rohini is Brahma the creator. So there’s a strong connection to creativity as well.

From the myth we already heard, we gather these associations:

  • Moon’s favoritism towards Rohini — an element of charm and beauty

  • Jealousy of the other wives (nakshatras) — connection to provoking jealousy

Rulerships

Now that we have an understanding of the symbols and the myths associated with Rohini, let’s spend some time thinking about its rulership.

As usual, if we break it down by the categories we use:

  • Rulership of the Nakshatra itself — Rohini is said to be ruled by the Moon. The Moon is associated with emotions, home, belonging, mother, family, etc.

  • Rulership of the zodiac sign the Nakshatra is placed in — As we established already, Rohini lies entirely within Taurus. Taurus is said to be ruled by Venus. Venus signifies material wealth, prosperity, sexuality, potency, pleasure, creativity, beauty, and luxury.

Putting it All Together

Now that we briefly looked at all the key meanings associated with Rohini, let’s put it all together.

  • #1 — from the word Rohini — associated with procreation, fertility, sensuality, and passion

  • #2 — associated with Brahma the creator — signifying creativity

  • #3from the Myth — associated with charm, beauty, and provocation of jealousy

  • #4 — associated with the Moon — signifying emotions, home, belonging, mother, family

  • #5 — associated with Venus — signifying material wealth, prosperity, sexuality, potency, pleasure, creativity, beauty, and luxury.

So what could it look like to have your moon placed in Rohini Nakshatra?

Moon in Rohini will often exhibit a strong sense of creativity. They will likely be drawn towards the creative arts from a younger age and would have a natural talent for them. Needless to say, they will be sensual people who like finer things in life. They will have the ability to charm others without even noticing it. They will likely have a strong desire to have their own family and a place of belonging.

Their charm and creativity can often provoke jealousy in others — so a Rohini moon person, from their childhood, would have dealt with jealousy from those around them.

If we are to illustrate the manifestation of Rohini with a formula, it could look something like this:

The longing for belonging and nurturing that the moon brings will combine with the beauty, sensuality, and creativity of Venus. Since Rohini is associated with fertility and procreation, the creative energy of Venus can bring a strong desire to create — whether it be to create a family to belong to or indulge in the creative arts.

A Quick Example

Disclaimer: This is a general analysis. While this can give you some pointers in understanding yourself, it’s important to remember you need to consider the entire chart for a holistic understanding.

rohini example

Chart generated using Cosmic Insights

This is an example of a chart that shows the Moon placed in Taurus, in Rohini Nakshatra, in the 10 house.

Generally speaking, this chart would indicate this person is:

  • creative, sensual, have a desire for belonging, and is passionate

  • Since the Moon is placed in the 10 House of Public Life, they are likely to be a public figure. Since the north node Rahu also conjuncts the Moon, it would indicate that Rohini’s manifestation will be quite tumultuous, which can often look dark. If they are an artist, they may be drawn towards art that depicts suffering, if they are an actor, in movies they will often get cast in roles that portray a dark or unstable character. Nevertheless, they would do it extremely well, as the creative energy of Rohini will be expounded in this placement because of the influence of Rahu.

  • Since the ruler of the 10th House — Venus is placed in the 11th House, conjunct Mercury in Gemini, they will have a natural talent for wit, provocation, and sarcasm. The creative genius of Rohini will combine with the intellect and wit of Mercury in Gemini, and exhibit a tremendous capability to be creative and provocative with their craft. Since the 11 House is strongly connected to the 10 Hours of public life, this would likely be influential in their career.
